The Kyzylarai Mountains

Attraction
Kyzylarai is a mountain range in the Aktogay District of the Karaganda Region, located in the central part of Kazakhstan. The highest peak of the massif is Mount Aksoran (1,565 m), which is the highest point of Saryarka and Central Kazakhstan.
Kyzylarai is a combination of granite mountains, rock outcroppings, pine forests, and steppe landscapes. The area is known for its relatively untouched nature and rich wildlife, including native argali sheep. At the foot of the mountains lies the village of Shaban_bai Bi, where community-based ecotourism is actively developing.
In addition to natural landmarks, the region is home to archaeological monuments, including Bronze Age Begazy burial mounds and historical stone statues.
Operating Hours
24/7, as this is a natural area without standard facility opening hours.
Entry & Pricing
Admission: Free for independent visitors.
Cost: No separate fee is charged for visiting the mountains themselves.
Organized Tours: Transportation, guide services, meals, and accommodation are paid for separately. For example, tourist programs with accommodation in Shabanbai Bi include these services in the total tour price.
Contact Information
The mountains do not have a separate ticket office or a central administration with a visitor helpline. To organize a trip, it is recommended to contact local tour operators and ecotourism organizers in the village of Shabanbai Bi.
Accessibility & Transportation
Kyzylarai is located in a remote steppe area, meaning public transport directly to the mountain range is virtually non-existent. Travelers usually get to the village of Shabanbai Bi first, and then continue by off-road vehicle/car and on foot. If traveling from Karaganda, it is recommended to plan your transport, fuel reserves, water, and supplies in advance.
Best Time to Visit
May – September, especially:
May–June — green slopes and comfortable temperatures;
July–August — ideal for full-scale hiking trips;
September — pleasant weather and beautiful autumn scenery.
Difficulty Level
Moderate to Above Average — depending on the chosen route. Climbing Mount Aksoran requires good physical fitness: the slopes are steep and rocky in places, and tourist infrastructure is limited. For a first-time visit, it is strongly advised to go with a local guide and avoid hiking alone.
