The Kunanbay Qazhy Mosque in Karkaraly – A Landmark of the Region's Historical and Cultural Heritage

As part of a tour of Karkaraly's cultural attractions, visitors explored one of the region's most significant historical sites—the Kunanbay Qazhy Mosque, built in 1851 at the initiative of Kunanbay Qazhy. Today, the mosque serves not only as an active place of worship but also as an important symbol of Kazakhstan's cultural and spiritual heritage. During the tour, visitors learned about the history of the mosque's construction and its architectural features. Historical records indicate that the imperial administration initially allocated a marshy plot of land for the project. However, thanks to Kunanbay Qazhy's determination, the construction site was relocated, and the mosque was ultimately built on one of the most scenic and suitable locations in Karkaraly. Guests also heard one of the mosque's most well-known historical stories. During the Soviet era, an attempt was made to remove the crescent from the mosque's minaret. According to local accounts, the person who climbed the minaret fell and was seriously injured, an incident many residents regarded as a sign of the site's sacredness. The crescent was later shot down and secretly preserved by a local resident for more than 70 years before being returned to its rightful place during the mosque's restoration. The tour also highlighted Kunanbay Qazhy's contribution to education. Alongside the mosque, he established a madrasa, locally known as the "Stone School." In addition to religious studies, students were taught arithmetic, literacy, and trade. Teachers were invited from Omsk and Semey, making the institution one of the region's leading educational centers of its time. Today, the Kunanbay Qazhy Mosque remains one of Karkaraly's most visited landmarks, preserving the region's rich history while contributing to the development of cultural and heritage tourism.
